Music Program

A strong, and wonderful music program enhances our worship service under the direction of Rita M. Hughes.

Robert Winslow, our talented St. Andrew's Organist, performs on the organ with heavenly sounds every Sunday.

Worship through traditional music by Chancel Choir, Soloists, and Vocal and Instrumental groups is intended to give praise  and inspiration during each service.

RITA HUGHES, Director of Music

I was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. Born in the home of a professional composer (my father), primarily Christian music, I was introduced early on to a variety of music styles. I am a graduate of The Royal Conservatory of Music and taught music both classroom and private for 37 years.  Throughout my adult lifetime I have also enjoyed being music director in several denominational churches. Preparing for my retirement, I spent some quality time vacationing throughout Florida looking for a large active retirement community that would allow a wide variety of activities and church involvement. Coming to Florida West Coast, it wasn’t long before I heard about Sun City Center and took a couple of years revisiting, knowing this was where I belonged. My few years directing the Sun City Center Women’s Chorus has been such a pleasure, and the opportunities to visit the various churches of this community showed how much fine music was central. When Ken Grom and Charleen Wilson announced their coming retirements and the leadership of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church approached me, I knew this would be an enjoyable honor serving in such a well established music ministry. Working with the choir and handbell participants to continue this church’s recognized music leadership will be a true pleasure.

“O come, let us sing for joy to the Lord.” Psalm 95:1

Many of his arrangements and recordings have been used for the Miss Florida Pageants. He also composes, having written several piano, vocal and hand bell pieces, as well as three children's musicals for American Stage and Ruth Eckerd Hall. Mr. Winslow plays regularly for the Spanish Lyric Theatre and has been musical director for American Stage Summer Children's camps and the Tampa Bay premiere of Claudia Shear's play "Dirty Blonde". He holds both bachelor and masters degrees in performance from the University of South Florida where he studied piano and organ. Currently, Mr. Winslow is a Professor of Music at Hillsborough Community College where he teaches piano, theory, music history, music technology, and arranges for and conducts the Jazz Band Program. He continues in his role as accompanist for the Tampa Bay Master Chorale, and the Zielinski Singers, under the direction of Dr. Richard Zielinski. He is no stranger to the Sun City Center area, as he performs regularly on Monday evenings at the Copper Penny, accompanies many of the Sun City Center/Kings Point music performances, and performs at many of their party/dance functions. Robert and his wife, Dr. Jo-Anne Winslow (organist for the United Community Church), reside in the Sun City Center area.
